Bolton – sinking a shaft through mine workings

Sinking a 25m diameter shaft in Denton using a creative and novel gravity drainage technique, saving the cost of pumping. This technique was reported in the engineering press, including NATM magazine.

Forensic investigation of shaft failure during construction. This involved a shaft in Greater Manchester that failed during construction due to piping in glacial soils. We also advised on the construction of a new shaft by diaphragm walling.

Advising on the sinking of shafts in environmentally sensitive and geotechnically challenging areas including the Brecon Beacons and the Lake District, including assessment of blasting, jet grouting and other geotechnical solutions.

Advising on efficient construction methods on dozens of shafts, for tunnel access and storm water storage. These have included shafts in Scotland, Wales England and Bangkok.
